“Bosnian Lessons”

In The National Interest, HI Assistant Director Gordon N. Bardos analyzes the implications our nation-building record in the Balkans for US efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“To understand the limits of what can be achieved militarily and politically in Iraq and Afghanistan, a good starting point is looking at what we have done in Bosnia and Kosovo over the past 10-15 years. The comparison is not encouraging.”

Professor Mitchell discusses the significance of the U.S. Administration's recent shift to the use of the term "occupied territories" in reference to Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This terminology has long been used by Georgian leaders and, according to Mitchell, U.S. use of this term signifies Washington's willingness to appease Georgia, and ease the country's concerns that it will be forgotten in light of the U.S. policy to "reset relations" with Russia.
